On May 1, 2017, Startup Calgary Inc. completed its strategic combination with Calgary Economic Development Ltd.
Startup Calgary Inc. is a local entrepreneurial start-up community.
Calgary Economic Development Ltd. is a not-for-profit organization and conduit for entrepreneurs funded by the City of Calgary.
Startup Calgary will retain its name and brand identity. Calgary Economic Development was charged with developing a local innovation framework when City Council approved the Opportunity Calgary funding initiative in February 2016.
The three-year pilot project transitions Startup Calgary’s programs to Calgary Economic Development and was approved by City Council in April 2017.
Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP represented Startup Calgary Inc. on a pro bono basis as part of its investment in the emerging companies community in Calgary. The transaction was led by Frank Turner and Steven Ngo (Corporate) with support from Tommy Gelbman and Taylor Schappert (Litigation).
