Osler is proud to announce that Tax partner, The Honourable Marshall Rothstein C.C., KC, was recognized with a Lifetime Contribution Award by the Canadian Tax Foundation (CTF). This award celebrates and honours those individuals who, over their career, have made substantial and outstanding contributions through their volunteer efforts and body of work over a number of years.

As recognized by the CTF in its announcement of this award, with over 50 years of judicial and legal experience, Justice Rothstein has “profoundly influenced Canadian tax law and the broader legal community”. Justice Rothstein served on the Supreme Court of Canada from 2006 to 2015 after being appointed to the Trial Division of the Federal Court of Canada in 1992 and elevated to the Federal Court of Appeal in 1999. Justice Rothstein’s work has shaped the Canadian business law landscape and tax law in particular. He authored more than 100 judgments and arbitral decisions on domestic and cross-border cases of commercial significance and complexity. His judgments included many key tax decisions ranging from cross-border taxation, corporate restructuring, and the principles underlying Canada’s tax framework.

The CTF also highlights that as a “strong supporter of the tax community, Justice Rothstein made valuable contributions to four works published by the Canadian Tax Foundation, and he participated in many conferences, generously sharing his insights. The legacy of Justice Rothstein — recognized, in 2017, as a Companion of the Order of Canada for his outstanding achievement and service to the nation — continues to shape Canadian jurisprudence.”

Established in 1945, the Canadian Tax Foundation is an independent tax research and education organization. The Foundation provides a forum for discussion and analysis of issues in taxation and government finance through its conferences, publications, and research projects.
