Osler is proud to announce that our National Tax Group has again been recognized as “Canada Tax Disputes Firm of the Year” at the 2023 International Tax Review (ITR) Americas Tax Awards.
The firm is also pleased to be recognized as the winner of the Impact Deal of the Year: Stoneway Capital restructuring. Stoneway was a Canadian company involved in the construction, ownership and operation of power generation facilities located in Argentina, and Osler was instrumental in advising during the complex and lengthy process of restructuring the Stoneway Group.
In addition to the firm’s achievements, Al Meghji was recognized with the North America Tax Disputes and Litigation Practice Leader of the Year award. Al is partner and head of the tax controversy practice at Osler. He is widely regarded as Canada’s preeminent tax litigation counsel, with an outstanding record of success in complex tax litigation matters in various courts. Al has been lead counsel in many of Canada’s most important and high-profile tax cases, having appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada more frequently than any other Canadian tax litigator, successfully arguing numerous landmark cases in that court.
Alan Kenigsberg was recognized as the North America Indirect Tax Practice Leader of the Year. Alan is partner and head of Osler’s customs, commodity tax and trade practice. His practice focuses on planning and advising clients about commodity taxation (including Goods and Services Tax, Harmonized Sales Tax and provincial sales taxes), customs, import/export controls, controlled goods, excise taxes, fuel taxes, cross-border taxation issues, and transfer pricing. The annual ITR Americas Tax Awards highlights the remarkable achievements of tax professionals throughout the Americas over a 12-month period. This year’s awards celebrate the most impressive tax, transfer pricing, tax disputes, and indirect tax teams and practitioners across 15 jurisdictions throughout the region.
