Artificial Intelligence is transforming the world around us. What once seemed like science fiction is increasingly becoming part of our daily lives. To help foster greater knowledge of where AI is headed and the issues surrounding its use, Osler has launched its Osler AI webinar series.

In Osler AI Series Module 4 – Regulatory Frameworks, we were joined by Marc Etienne Ouimette, Global Lead, AI Policy (AWS) at Amazon. Marc Etienne and the Osler team discussed key regulatory concepts around AI, including the implications of Bill C-27, including the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Data Act and rules regarding automated decision systems. We placed Bill C-27 in a global context by comparing it to the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act and the approach to AI regulation in the United Kingdom and United States. In addition, we explored how Bill C-27 can be improved to ensure that it establishes clear rules to mitigate risks of significant harm, while enabling the development and deployment of AI systems in Canada.
