Osler is proud to announce that Calgary-based partners Janice Buckingham, the former co-lead of the Energy Practice, and Andrea Whyte in the Corporate Group, have been appointed as King’s Counsel. This significant honour celebrates their legal and professional achievements.
The title is given in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the legal community.” Before a lawyer can be granted the designation, a committee including representatives from all three levels of Alberta’s court system, as well as members of the Law Society of Alberta and the Alberta branch of the Canadian Bar Association must review the applicants before their names are submitted to the provincial cabinet for consideration and approval.
“The King’s Counsel designation is a prized distinction within the Canadian justice system. By making positive contributions to the profession, these honourees represent the legal profession at its best,” says Alberta Minister of Justice and Attorney General Mickey Amery.
Andrea specializes in corporate law with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, securities and corporate governance. She is a frequent advisor to boards and special committees and serves as a director of both public and private companies. Andrea is a member of the Alberta Securities Commission Advisory Committee and has also practised in Osler’s New York office. Andrea is known for her strategic advice and helping clients navigate through complex situations.

Her practice focuses on private mergers, acquisitions, and the commercial and strategic development of complex energy production, liquefaction, transportation and storage projects in Canada.
